In these days the pastor is often expected to act like a college development officer, establishing and maintaining relationships with large donors and asking them to consider significant gifts. This task may also fall to a stewardship or building committee in the midst of major fund appeal.
However, pastors and most lay people are never trained for this task and are very uncomfortable asking people for
money.  For that situation there is this handy tool from the ELCA.  It is a 50 minute participatory workshop to help develop and practice basic skills in asking for a contribution.
Now or a joke… Two pastors were lamenting at how small a voice they had in the community compared to the wealthy members.  “Money talks,” said the first pastor.

“True,” said the second pastor, “and the only thing my money says is ‘goodbye’.”
